CHIEF EXECUTIVE Profile of Siemens USA CEO: “Democratizing digital advances”

As Siemens USA tallies $23 billion in annual revenues and business continues to rise in the U.S. market, CEO Barbara Humpton spoke to Chief Executive about the company’s strategy to lead the digital transformation.

Key to this strategy is the commitment to an 11-percent year-over-year increase in Siemens USA’s R&D investments, now reaching $1.4 billion annually. Another essential part is the acquisition of software companies such as Mendix, a Boston-based company that now reflects Siemens’ reinvention into one of the top-ten software companies in the world. Chief Executive describes Mendix as “a leader in developing and deploying ‘low-code/no-code’ platforms that enable ‘citizen developers’ to come up with software advances without specific training as coders.”

Humpton tells Chief Executive that this “democratizing” of digital advances has led Siemens USA to start its own consulting group for “supporting customers in their own digital journey.”

 “What you can quickly see is that every company has a unique challenge,” Humpton says. “In some companies, what we’re trying to do is help solve a particular operational problem; others are trying to create a new business model; and others are just trying to get started and take the first step in digital transformation.”
