A survey released this month by the Business Roundtable and Change the Equation lays out the challenges that American businesses face when it comes to the national shortage of skilled workers. You can click here to read the full survey, but here are a few key excerpts that caught my eye: 97% of CEOs who responded said that the “skills gap” in America is a problem for their company. About 60% of job openings require basic STEM skills and 42% require advanced STEM skills. This weekend is the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology National Finals, marking the 15th anniversary of the nation’s premier research competition for high school students.  I’m proud of how the Siemens Competition has grown over the past 15 years, and even prouder that interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) research projects submitted has steadily increased over the years. more...

Across the U.S. and around the world, businesses and governments are working to achieve improved energy efficiency and reduce operational costs.  In the federal sector, President Obama has created an ambitious vision for energy efficiency, including the goal of federal facilities to generate 20% of their energy from renewables by 2020, in addition to a 28% reduction in government-wide greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn would entail $8 billion to $11 billion in reduced energy costs.more...

On Veterans Day, Siemens USA salutes America’s veterans – the proud men and women who represent the best and bravest of our nation. Veterans have shown a commitment to excellence that truly sets them apart. We’re honored that more than 3,600 veterans have chosen to bring their energy and talent to Siemens, performing a variety of functions throughout the company. Our veterans have inspiring stories to tell, and today I’m pleased to add three new names to Siemens’ “Wall of Heroes.” more...

A strong advanced manufacturing sector is a “must have” for the United States. And it will take business leaders, academics and government officials working together to accelerate advanced manufacturing in our country. Those were the major takeaways from a roundtable discussion I participated in on Monday at the White House with President Obama and members of his Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) 2.0 Steering Committee – a panel that includes CEOs and top higher education leaders.more...

As CEOs seek to grow their business the answer often comes down to one word – innovation. Innovation is the heart that pumps out new value to existing and new customers. With this in mind, I thought it would be valuable to assemble the CEOs of top innovative companies and ask questions like: how they develop strategy, how they build innovation into their corporate culture, and what they see the future holds. Below are the answers from these 3 CEOs: more...

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to join Ohio Governor John Kasich at the University of Cincinnati (UC) as he signed House Bill 488, which will help companies like Siemens to train, recruit and hire skilled and deserving veterans. It was an honor to stand alongside both active and retired service members as we highlighted HB 488 and the work of Governor Kasich and other elected officials to advance opportunities for veterans.more...

Earlier this week, I participated in a discussion along with leaders such as U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker on educating and employing America’s future leaders at the Clinton Global Initiative America.  As Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pointed out, nearly six million young Americans between the ages of 16 and 24 are out of school and out of work.  Yet, businesses still report more than four million open jobs.  It’s clear that too many young peoplemore...

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Stand Up To Cancer® co-Founder Kathleen Lobb and local business leaders to launch the Central Florida leg of a campaign tour called “The Baton Pass™” that raises funds for Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, to support its innovative cancer research, designed to get new therapies to patients quickly.  more...
